Baccarat History & Variations

History of Baccarat

Origins: A 19th-Century French Game with an Italian Legend

Almost every account of baccarat repeats the same origin story: a 15th-century Italian named Felix Falguiere invented it, based on an Etruscan ritual, and named it "baccara" for the Italian word for zero. None of that holds up. There is no contemporary evidence of the game before the 19th century, surviving records of 18th-century Italian casinos never mention it, and no Italian dialect has been shown to use "baccara" to mean zero. The Italian-origin claim appears to trace to an 1867 French dictionary entry that offered no evidence for it.

What the documents actually show is a French game. Baccarat first appears in France in the early 1800s, and the earliest known published rules are in Charles Van-Tenac's Album des jeux de hasard et de combinaisons (1847). That original form is now called Baccarat Banque, or Baccarat à Deux Tableaux, and it was played with three decks. The most plausible explanation of the name, from card-game historian Thierry Depaulis, is the Provençal expression fa bacarrat, "go bankrupt."

French Aristocracy and the Evolution of Chemin de Fer

By the mid-19th century a faster variant had appeared: Chemin de Fer, "railway," a name that either describes the dealing shoe traveling around the table or simply signals speed, railways being the fastest thing anyone knew at the time. An 1883 account by Jean Quinola describes it growing out of a dealer's-choice game in which players took turns banking and kept the bank as long as they won.

In Chemin de Fer the bank passes from player to player, the other players bet against the banker rather than against the house, and both sides keep a limited choice about drawing a third card. The casino only supplies a croupier and takes a commission on winning banks. It is traditionally dealt from six decks. This is the version featured in the early James Bond stories, and it survives today in a handful of European casinos, such as the Casino di Venezia.

Baccarat and Bond: A Game of Sophistication

When Ian Fleming introduced James Bond in Casino Royale (1953), he wasn't playing poker – he was playing baccarat. This was no accident.

Fleming was inspired by the game's associations with mystique, strategy, and grace under pressure. The game's elegance, simple rules, and tension-filled rounds mirrored Bond's own persona.

The Bond novels and early films helped reintroduce baccarat to an international audience, particularly the Chemin de Fer variant. While more recent films have featured Texas Hold'em, baccarat remains the purist's casino game – subtle, elegant, and ruthlessly efficient.

Havana to Vegas: The Rise of Punto Banco

In the 1950s a new version of baccarat emerged in Havana, Cuba, where it is said to have originated at the Capri Casino. Known as Punto Banco (literally "Player Banker"), this form was simpler and removed all player decision-making. It was 100% dealer-run, making it faster, more scalable, and better suited to commercial casino floors.

The game reached Las Vegas after Cuba's casinos closed at the end of the decade; its arrival at the Sands in 1959 is usually credited to Tommy Renzoni, though that detail rests on industry lore rather than documented record. Initially reserved for VIPs, baccarat's profile steadily grew, above all in Asian markets:

  • Macau, where VIP and mass baccarat together made up roughly 85% of gross gaming revenue in the first quarter of 2026, according to regulator DICJ
  • Singapore (Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World)
  • Philippines, Korea, and Malaysia

Online & Live Dealer Evolution

The 2000s saw baccarat evolve again – this time onto screens:

  • The first versions were RNG-based (Random Number Generator), with static graphics and mouse-click interactions.
  • Live dealer studios such as Evolution then brought real tables to the screen, streamed in HD with human dealers.
  • Variants like Speed Baccarat, which cuts a round from about 48 seconds to 27, and Baccarat Squeeze, which restores the slow card reveal of the Macau VIP rooms, have followed.

Baccarat in Asia: A Cultural Mainstay

In China, Hong Kong, and Vietnam, baccarat has taken on almost cultural significance. The game's focus on luck, superstition, and the number 9 (which symbolizes longevity in Chinese culture) has made it particularly appealing.

Many players employ rituals like blowing on cards, tapping chips, or following hot/cold streaks. The mystique and rhythm of the game are as important as the odds themselves.

Enduring Legacy

From noble parlors and Bond movies to mobile phones and livestreams, baccarat has evolved without losing its essence. Today, baccarat is:

  • The dominant casino game in the world's largest gaming market: Macau's casinos took more than US$20 billion from baccarat alone in 2025
  • Played at almost every online casino with a live dealer lobby
  • Still elegant, minimal, and strategic

Variations of Baccarat

Over time, numerous baccarat variations have emerged – each offering its own unique flavor, speed, and betting opportunities. Below, we explore the most popular baccarat versions and which game providers offer the best experiences for each.

Punto Banco (North American Baccarat)

Punto Banco is the most widely played version of baccarat today, especially in the United States, Canada, and online casinos. Players bet on the Player or Banker hand, and no decision-making is involved after betting – the casino follows a fixed set of drawing rules. This streamlined version of baccarat has become the gold standard for online and land-based casinos worldwide, offering one of the lowest house edges of any casino table game: the Banker bet returns 98.94% (a 1.06% edge on eight decks).

Major Providers: Evolution, Pragmatic Play, Live88, Ezugi, Vivo Gaming, Asia Gaming, SA Gaming, Authentic Gaming
Play It At: Bitcasino.io, TheOnlineCasino.com

Chemin de Fer

In Chemin de Fer ("Chemmy"), players take turns being the banker and can decide whether to draw a third card, adding an element of strategy. It remains more popular in France and Monte Carlo. This classic European variant is considered the most sophisticated form of baccarat, featuring unique betting patterns and social dynamics that have made it a favorite among high-stakes players since the 19th century. Because players bank against each other, it is rarely offered online.

Where to find it: A few land-based European casinos, such as the Casino di Venezia and the Saint-Vincent Casino in Italy.

Baccarat Banque

Baccarat Banque features one player acting as the banker for an entire shoe. It involves strategic decision-making and typically fewer players. This traditional French variation is distinguished by its three-hand dealing system and complex betting strategies, making it particularly appealing to experienced players seeking a more challenging baccarat experience.

Where to find it: Land-based only. This is the original 19th-century form of the game, traditionally dealt from three decks.

3-Card Baccarat

3-Card Baccarat is a unique Asian variant that has gained significant popularity in Macau and Hong Kong. Unlike traditional baccarat, both Player and Banker receive three cards initially with no additional draws. The game features a special hierarchy where three face cards (J, Q, K) form the highest possible hand, followed by three-7s as the second-highest hand. For all other combinations, normal baccarat point counting applies. While less common in western casinos, this variant offers a distinctive playing experience with different strategic considerations due to the fixed three-card hands.

Where to find it: Not offered as an online variant by any of the live-dealer providers or casinos reviewed on this site.

Speed Baccarat

Speed Baccarat delivers a lightning-fast version of the traditional game, with rounds completed in about 27 seconds. This innovative variant has revolutionized online baccarat by offering rapid-fire gameplay and maintaining the same favorable odds as traditional baccarat, making it increasingly popular among players who enjoy fast-paced action.

Major Providers: Evolution, Pragmatic Play, Live88, Ezugi, Asia Gaming, Oriental Game, SA Gaming
Play It At: Sportsbet.io, Bitcasino.io, Wild.io, TheOnlineCasino.com

Dragon Tiger

Dragon Tiger simplifies baccarat even further. Players bet whether the Dragon or Tiger hand will be higher – with no drawing rules, just one card per side. This Asian-inspired variation has gained massive popularity in online casinos due to its straightforward gameplay and quick rounds, offering a house edge of 3.73% on the Dragon and Tiger bets when a tie returns half the stake. Our sister site DragonTiger.gg covers the game in full: the rules table by table and studio by studio, the exact odds, and the documented history.

Major Providers: Evolution, Pragmatic Play, Ezugi, Vivo Gaming, Asia Gaming, SA Gaming, Oriental Game
Play It At: Bitcasino.io, Sportsbet.io

American Baccarat

American Baccarat follows the Punto Banco structure but with slight commission or side bet variations at U.S. land-based casinos. This Vegas-style adaptation has become the standard in North American casinos, often with additional side bets and, at some properties, progressive jackpot bets.

Where to find it: Online, this is simply Punto Banco (see above); the commission and side-bet variations described here belong to U.S. land-based casinos.

Mini Baccarat

Mini Baccarat has revolutionized baccarat accessibility by offering lower minimum bets and faster gameplay on a smaller table. It opened up what was once an exclusive game by bringing table minimums down to a fraction of those in the high-limit room. With identical rules to standard Punto Banco but a faster pace (more hands per hour) due to the dealer handling all cards, Mini Baccarat provides the perfect entry point for new players while maintaining all the excitement and favorable odds of traditional baccarat.

Where to find it: Mostly a land-based table format. Online, Playtech runs a Mini Baccarat table from its Pennsylvania studio, and TheOnlineCasino.com offers an RNG version.

Midi Baccarat

Midi Baccarat offers mid-stakes gameplay, often allowing players to handle their cards. This hybrid version bridges the gap between mini and full-size baccarat, providing an optimal balance of traditional ceremony and faster gameplay that has made it increasingly popular in both Asian and Western markets.

Where to find it: Land-based only. None of the online providers or casinos reviewed on this site offers a distinct midi table.

European Baccarat

European Baccarat allows players limited choices on drawing a third card, unlike fixed rules in Punto Banco. This continental variation adds an extra layer of strategy to the game, making it particularly popular among skilled players who enjoy having more control over their gameplay decisions.

Where to find it: Not offered as an online variant by any of the live-dealer providers or casinos reviewed on this site.

No Commission Baccarat

No Commission Baccarat removes the typical 5% commission on Banker wins but adjusts payout structures slightly. This modern adaptation has simplified the betting process while maintaining a competitive house edge of just 1.46% on banker bets, making it increasingly popular in both online and land-based casinos.

Major Providers: Evolution, Pragmatic Play, Ezugi, SA Gaming
Play It At: Bitcasino.io, Sportsbet.io, Wild.io

Dragon Tiger Baccarat and Tiger Baccarat (Land-Based Side-Bet Variants)

Some casino floors deal ordinary punto banco with an extra ring of side bets built on two results: Banker winning with a total of 6 (the Tiger) and Player winning with a total of 7 (the Dragon). Hoiana Resort & Golf, the integrated resort near Hoi An in central Vietnam, publishes the full rules and pay tables for two such games on its own website, which few land-based casinos do. The hands are dealt exactly as in standard baccarat, with Player and Banker hands and the usual third-card table. Each game comes in a commission version, where Banker pays 0.95 to 1, and a non-commission version, where Banker pays 1 to 1 but only 1 to 2 when it wins with a 6.

Despite the name, Dragon Tiger Baccarat is not Dragon Tiger. It is baccarat with Dragon and Tiger side bets, the same pattern as the "Dragon Tiger Baccarat" rules that Singapore's Gambling Regulatory Authority published for Marina Bay Sands with effect from December 7, 2023, and not the two-card game covered by DragonTiger.gg. Hoiana's published list of twelve table games includes four from the baccarat family and does not include the two-card game.

Every side bet here costs between 10.36% and 16.68% of the stake, against 1.06% for the commission Banker bet at the same table. The single Tiger bet is dearer than either of its halves, so a player who wants Banker's winning 6 covered gives up less by betting Small Tiger and Big Tiger separately. The non-commission version has a price as well: paying half on a winning 6 lifts the Banker edge from 1.06% to 1.46%. The derivations follow the method on our Odds & Payouts page, and the full breakdown is in our analysis of the Hoiana pay tables. To price these bets at a different payout or deck count, use the Baccarat Probability Calculator.

What Hoiana does not publish: the number of decks, table limits, or how many tables deal each variant. The house edges are ours, computed by exact enumeration of every possible hand, and they assume an eight-deck shoe. With six decks each Dragon and Tiger figure moves by less than 0.1 percentage point; the Pair bets are the exception, rising to 11.25%. Every side bet loses on any other result, as Hoiana's rules state. Sources: Hoiana Resort & Golf (Hoi An South Development), Dragon Tiger Baccarat and Hoiana Tiger Baccarat rules pages and casino page, read September 20, 2026; Singapore Gambling Regulatory Authority, Baccarat Games (MBS) and its superseded Dragon Tiger Baccarat rules: first version effective December 7, 2023, current Version 3 effective December 12, 2025. The regulator now lists six Dragon Tiger Baccarat titles at Marina Bay Sands, and its record for the two-card game itself is set out on DragonTiger.gg's timeline. We have no commercial relationship with Hoiana.
